Handmade Enamel Jewellery

Handmade enamel jewellery with a beautifully crafted finish has been a popular jewellery item for centuries. With our range of enamel jewellery both online and in our Marylebone jewellery store we thought we would share a bit more about the history of this inspiring and historical craft.

Enamel jewellery and enamel techniques date back to 224AD when master Iranian craftsmen introduced enamel to the world. The Mughals then brought the technique to India in the 13th Century.

The colours & designs we have used in our handmade enamel jewellery are inspired by the vibrant colours that many old palace walls in Northern India from the Mughal era are hand painted. Some of these enamel jewellery designs are inspired by almost ‘forgotten’ old royal residences. From Chevron patterns & geometric symmetry to paintings of old Hindu & Muslim mythology to the floral detail – they are very much symbolic of the ancient art and architecture of old royal India.

Indeed one can find similar influences in the old palaces from the European renaissance too.

Traditional & detailed enamel jewellery work is becoming a harder & harder technique to get done, with only a handful of really skilled artisans who are able to practice the art with the perfection and skill required.
