Grid Enamel Zenana Earrings

Combining our love for grids, symmetry and enamel.

The Enamel detail is in the feathers of a peacock.

The earrings explore the ancient technique of Enamel & The ‘Zenana’. Alongside with fabulous design (architecture, jewellery, clothes, food, gardens), The Mughals also introduced certain customs that were not the norm in India. One such custom was ‘Zenana’ – whereby women especially of royal households lived in private quarters, often shielded from the public eye. If in public they would be covered…palaces, mosques and even temples were formed to cater around this custom, whereby women would view the world through intricately decorated windows and doors….

The zenana remained a custom for centuries, women embraced it….it gave them a sense of identity, grandeur, dignity, status…..

Hand enamel techniques date back to 224AD when master Iranian craftsmen introduced enamel to the world. The Mughals then brought the technique to India in the 13th Century.
