Old Mine Cut Diamonds
November 2025
We have been using this style of diamonds in our pieces for the past year and a half. Interestingly they have become all the rage in the past few months because of Taylors Swifts engagement ring which featured an Old Mine Cut diamond.
This style of diamond is reminiscent of antiquity. The kind of look & feel to jewellery we adore.
Old Mine Cut diamonds were popular and originated in the early 1700s to the 1800s. Considered the ‘predecessor’ to the modern round brilliant cut diamonds.
As highlighted and quoted by Sothebys on Old Mine Cut diamonds:
’For those who appreciate antique and vintage styles – like Taylor Swift – Old Mine Cut diamonds have a soft romantic appearance. These diamonds are difficult to come by and quite popular amongst those ‘in the know’. Designed to maximize the diamond’s brilliance in candlelight, the ‘Old Mine Cut’ style emerged in the 1700s. These diamonds generally feature a squarish shape with rounded corners and 58 facets. During the Victorian era, the cushion cut gained popularity as advancements in diamond cutting techniques led to the transition away from the Old Mine Cut. The cushion cut retained the rounded corners and larger facets but introduced more refined proportions and symmetry. Is the Old Mine Cut set for a resurgence?
